TEHRAN (AFP) ? Authorities in Tehran will this month stage a two-week trial of only allowing cars into the capital on certain days depending on whether the licence plate ends with an odd or even number, state television said.

The trial will be the latest measure aimed at reducing the serious congestion and pollution that besets the sprawling capital, and will apparently be accompanied by an improvement in the city's decrepit public transport system.

According to the report Thursday, the odd-even scheme was approved after an opinion poll showed 62 percent of residents here were in favour of the measure. It will apply to a 150 square kilometre (60 square mile) area of the city.
