MONTREAL (AFP) — Rebel women tennis players have been urged not to boycott the Olympic Games because of an escalating row over Germany's decision not to send its top two players to Athens next week.
But Larry Scott, the chief executive of the WTA Tour, admitted here on Thursday that the players are still nowhere near a resolution to the crisis.
Some of the world's leading players, including French Open champion Anastasia Myskina of Russia and French number one Amelie Mauresmo, are upset that Germany's Olympic Committee has refused to include Anca Barna and Marlene Weingartner in the team despite both players qualifying for the tournament under the criteria laid down by the International Tennis Federation.
Barna and Weingartner are ranked 46th and 52nd in the world respectively - the ITF criteria lays down that players ranked in the top 56 automatically qualify for ...
