Palestinians march for hunger strike prisoners as Israel tempts inmates

GAZA CITY (AFP) — Thousands of Palestinians staged mass shows of support for inmates on hunger strike in Israeli jails as authorities looked to the aromas of barbecues and fresh bread to break the prisoners' resolve.

Some 3,000 supporters took to the streets of Gaza City in a solidarity march, brandishing photos of prisoners and placards demanding their immediate release.

The crowds assembled outside the local offices of the Red Cross before marching towards the Gaza headquarters of the United Nations where they delivered a letter addressed to Secretary General Kofi Annan, calling for him to apply pressure on Israel and improve conditions for the prisoners.
