Wheldon wins third IRL event

NAZARETH, United States (AFP) — Dan Wheldon won his third Indy Racing League event this season Sunday in an emotional one-mile oval 225-lap race, which was the 100th race in IRL history and the last at the Nazareth Speedway.

And to complete the day, he defeated teammates Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti, making it the first time in IRL history that one team swept the top three positions.

"This is the biggest win of my career as a team owner it's so special," said Michael Andretti, who won the first race at this track as a driver in 1987. "To do it 1-2-3 is awesome. It was a perfect day. We bookended it. We won the first one here as a driver and then to win the last one here as a team owner makes it very special. Wow, what a day."
