Hurricane Frances heads to Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, sets sights on Florida

MIAMI (AFP) — A potentially devastating Hurricane Frances roared toward the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos islands and appeared to have set its sights on Florida, still reeling from a deadly storm earlier this month.
On Wednesday morning, the hurricane was packing sustained winds of 220 kilometers (140 miles) per hour but had higher gusts and could intensify further, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, calling Frances "dangerous."
Forecasters projected it would pass near or right over the Turks and Caicos islands and the southeastern Bahamas by Thursday morning.
Then it could continue on its northwesterly course and slam into Florida by the end of the week, when Americans celebrate the long Labor Day holiday weekend, one of the busiest travel times of the year.
