Golden clouds of locusts continue inexorable advance into Senegal capital

DAKAR (AFP) — Clouds of glittering yellow locusts continued their inexorable advance across west Africa into the Senegalese capital Dakar.
The first of the finger-length insects was spotted late Tuesday in two northern suburub even as President Abdoulaye Wade issued a battlecry to agriculture ministers from nine neighboring countries to beat back the hordes that have swarmed the region in the worst plague in more than a decade.
"I propose that we mobilize the army because for me this is a real war," Wade said, proposing that five operational bases -- in Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad -- be mounted to coordinate the anti-locust drive.
The bases would share pesticides, vehicles and communications equipment to treat infested areas as well as prevent the hatching and laying cycles of future generations.
