MONTEVIDEO (AFP) — A second-half goal from Carlos Bueno gave Uruguay a 1-0 win over Ecuador to breathe new life into their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The crucial goal came in the 58th minute when Bueno beat Ecuador goalkeeper Edwin Villafuerte to a pinpoint cross from the right by Fabian Estoyanoff.

In fact, Estoyanoff had only been on the pitch for a minute as a second half substitute as Uruguay tried desperately to break down a resilient Ecuador defence.
