LOS ANGELES, (AFP) — San Francisco have denied the Los Angeles Dodgers a division title, with a 4-2 Major League Baseball triumph that kept the Giants in the thick of the National League playoff race.
The Dodgers, who have led the NL West division every day since July 7, fell to 92-68 and failed to clinch their first playoff berth since 1996 while the Giants rose to 90-70.
The Giants must defeat the Dodgers here Saturday and Sunday to force a one-game playoff for the division crown Monday in San Francisco.
But that is not the only path to the playoff for the California rivals, one of whom could collect the wild-card playoff berth for the best second-place club by beating back the challenge of the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs.
