Demonised by Democrats, Dick Cheney is widely seen as the eminence grise of President George W. Bush and is one of the most powerful vice presidents in American political history.

Cheney was sent into a White House bunker after the September 11, 2001 attacks and has kept a low profile for much of the Bush administration. He has been one of the hardline defenders of the Iran invasion and mired in controversy over past links to Halliburton, the oil services giant that has huge US military contracts.
