US vetoes Arab resolution calling for end to Israel's Gaza operations

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — The United States vetoed an Arab-backed draft resolution at the UN Security Council, which would have called on Israel to end its deadly military operation in the Gaza Strip.
Britain, Germany and Romania abstained from the vote, and the 11 other council members voted for it.
The resolution needed at least nine votes on the 15 member council, but also had to avoid a veto from the five permanent members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
Algerian ambassador Abdallah Baali, whose nation had presented the draft on behalf of Arab members of the United Nations, said "the Security Council has once again failed the Palestinian people." ...
