'Shark Tale' gobbles up North American box office competition

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — The animated flick "Shark Tale" sank the competition for the second week in a row, gobbling up 31.7 million dollars over the weekend in North American theaters, preliminary figures showed.

The film, about a fast-talking small fish who befriends a vegetarian shark, has grossed 87.7 million dollars in its first two weeks in theaters nationwide, according to box office-trackers Exhibitor Relations.

The high school football drama "Friday Night Lights," starring Billy Bob Thornton as the coach of a small Texas town's young team, kicked off its first weekend by raking in an estimated 20.5 million dollars.

"Ladder 49," a John Travolta film about heroic firefighters, finished third with 13.2 million dollars.
