Bush retakes lead over Kerry in tight race, key states too close to call

WASHINGTON (AFP) — George W. Bush regained a slim lead over his Democratic challenger John Kerry in an extremely tight race for the US presidency, according to early projections and returns from Tuesday's election but all key swing states remained in play with results too close to call.
With polling stations closed in 40 states and the District of Columbia, Bush pulled to within less than 100 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, according to US television networks which projected him winning 18 states and 171 electoral votes.
Kerry was set to win 10 states and the federal capital with their 112 electoral votes, the networks said.
Bush told reporters at the White House he was "very upbeat" and predicted victory over Kerry.
