US commonwealth of Puerto Rico elects governor who does not want US statehood

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AFP) — The US commonwealth of Puerto Rico elected a new governor, Anibal Acevedo Vila, the local elections commission said, as the Caribbean island of four million endorsed its political status quo over a potential quest for US statehood.
After see-sawing leads, the State Election Commissions on Wednesday certified Acevedo Vila of the Popular Democratic Party as having defeated former governor Pedro Rossello of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party by 48.4 percent to 48.2 percent or fewer than 4,000 votes with more than 98 percent of the votes counted.
"We want a government of consensus to help the future of our island," said Vila, a 39-year-old lawyer who served for the past four years as Puerto Rico's non-voting delegate in the US Congress.
