LIVERPOOL (AFP) — Liverpool, without injured stars Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Djibril Cisse, proved in Spain they are blending into a winning team under Spanish manager Rafa Benitez.

Their 1-0 Champions League win at Deportivo La Coruna silenced the doubters and if Liverpool defeat Monaco away later this month a place they can qualify for the knock-out second phase.

"We had problems before the game with players being injured, but what is important is that when the other players do get into the side they show what they can do," said the 44-year-old Spanish coach.
