Karzai vows to stamp out private militias

KABUL (AFP) — Afghanistan's newly elected President Hamid Karzai vowed to eliminate private militias as he acknowledged his victory for the first time in the country's historic October 9 ballot.
"The private militias will be eliminated. There will be no private armies," Karzai told reporters Thursday after a speech at the presidential palace in Kabul.
Karzai said he would fulfill the promises he had made to the people during the campaign to ensure a stable and bright future for wartorn Afghanistan.
"My countrymen and women, thank you for the trust you have put in me. I hope I will fulfill the promises that I have done to you.
"....in Afghanistan people voted for me and other candidates. I thank those who voted for me and for other candidates; their vote was for the stable future of Afghanistan, we respect their vote," he said in the speech.
