Three years on, Bush thanks Canada for Sept 11 help

HALIFAX, Canada (AFP) — President George W. Bush personally thanked Canada for sheltering 33,000 Americans stranded on its soil when US airspace closed during the September 11 attacks in 2001.
Bush ended an overnight stay in Canada by visiting the country's Atlantic coast, where airliners were grounded after terrorists hijacked planes and sent them on suicide missions against US landmarks.
"When the American planes were diverted away from home, passengers knew they were safe and welcome the moment they saw the maple leaf flag," Bush said, using the lasting friendship weathering recent disagreements.
"For days after September 11th, Canadians came to the aid of men and women and children who were worried and confused and had nowhere to sleep," the president said.
