Japanese man jailed for online movie piracy in Hollywood crackdown

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — A Japanese court has sentenced a businessman to jail for circulating pirated movies on the Internet as Hollywood studios crack down on international copyright thieves, officials said.
In Japan's first prosecution for copyright violation, the Kyoto District Court sentenced Yoshihiro Inoue, 42, to one year in jail, but suspended the sentence for three years.
Self-employed Inoue was arrested in November 27 last year for distributing a digital copy of the Oscar-winning film "A Beautiful Mind" through a peer-to-peer network.
"The Kyoto conviction represents a judicial milestone not only in Japan, but globally," said Mike Ellis of the Asia Pacific branch of the Hollywood studio lobby group, the Motion Picture Association of America.
