Barghuti throws Palestinian leadership into turmoil; Sharon seeks partners

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) — The Palestinian leadership was in turmoil after jailed intifada leader Marwan Barghuti entered the presidential campaign, pitting himself against PLO chairman Mahmud Abbas.
In a stunning u-turn, the West Bank Fatah leader filed his candidacy late Wednesday for the January 9 contest to succeed the late Palestinian Authority president Yasser Arafat with barely three hours to go before the midnight deadline for the close of nominations.
After lodging the nomination papers with the Palestinian elections commission, Barghuti's wife Fadwa read a statement from her husband who is currently began serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for anti-Israeli attacks.
Barghuti said he had decided to run "after deep reflection" and after having "received hundreds of messages from the grassroots (of Fatah) and from other Palestinian figures and cadres".
