LIMA (AFP) — President Alejandro Toledo said that the Inter-American Human Rights Court had upheld the terrorism conviction of New Yorker Lori Berenson, sentenced to 20 years prison in Peru.

"Fortunately, with intelligence, fairness and legal experience (the court's) justices have upheld the sentence," Toledo told Radiprogramas del Peru radio.

Berenson had been sentenced to life in prison in 1996 by a military court, but that ruling was overturned in August 2000.
