US Baseball boss undergoes minor surgery

NEW YORK (AFP) — Seventy-year-old Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig underwent successful surgery, having a melanoma removed from his forehead.

Selig was to remain hospitalized overnight but expected to return to work by the end of the week.

The lesion was found during a routine medical examination in November and a skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. The procedure, which reportedly also included a skin graft, took place at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Selig said Monday he would support US Congress intervention in the American baseball league's doping test and punishment policy if a sufficiently toughened deal cannot be secured in talks with the major league players' union.
