Premiere secures German TV deal for 2006 World Cup

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) — The German subscription TV channel Premiere said it would broadcast live all 64 matches of the 2006 World Cup to be hosted by Germany.

Premiere, formerly part of the now dismantled Kirch group, will have exclusive domestic rights to eight of the matches after reaching agreement with the Infront Sports and Media agency, which sells the rights for football's world governing body FIFA.

Financial details of the deal were not revealed, but a source from the German broadcaster told AFP it was worth around 25 million euros (33.2 million dollars).

Two state-owned channels, ARD and ZDF, have already obtained the rights to show 48 matches of the finals, which take place from June 9 to July 9, 2006.
