Red Cross appeals for 44 million dollars to help quake victims

GENEVA (AFP) — The international Red Cross warned that its relief operation for victims of the tidal waves disaster in south Asia had barely reached the "tip of the iceberg", as it appealed for 50 million Swiss francs (44 million dollars, 32 million euros) in aid.

"This is the largest catastrophe we have seen in decades. We haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg yet," Markku Niskala, secretary general of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said in a statement.

"We face a huge challenge due to the vast area affected," he added.

Major casualties and emergency needs were expected in India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands, close to the epicentre of the earthquake, the Federation said.
