FBI did not use controversial e-mail interception system in 2002 and 2003

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The FBI did not use a controversial e-mail interception system known as Carnivore in either 2002 or 2003, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by a watchdog group called Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).

"The FBI made no use of DCS 1000 (formerly known as Carnivore) to effect court-ordered surveillance," during fiscal years 2002 and 2003, said the group in a statement.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents "rather utilized commercially available software," according to EPIC.

'Carnivore' was strongly criticized by EPIC and other civil liberty groups, concerned over privacy violations concerning unauthorized e-mail intercepts.
