Tottenham sign Finland's Tainio

LONDON (AFP) — Tottenham Hotspur have signed Finland midfielder Teemu Tainio from Auxerre, the English Premiership side announced.

The 25-year-old will be out of contract at the French club in July and is therefore set to join Tottenham on a free transfer.

Spurs have been active during the January transfer window and Tanio, scorer of five goals in 25 international appearances, will join strikers Mido and Mounir El Hamdaoui at the London club.

Tottenham sporting director Frank Arnesen said: "We are delighted that we have been able to secure Teemu now and do not have to wait until the summer to make the signing.

"We know many other top clubs were keen on him. He is a versatile midfielder who can play anywhere across the middle."
