Bush sends lunar new year wishes

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President George W. Bush offered his "best wishes for peace and prosperity" to those ushering in lunar new year -- the Year of the Rooster.

The occasion "reminds all Americans of the unique fabric that makes up our country and the diversity that has made our nation stronger and better," Bush said. "Laura joins me in sending our best wishes for peace and prosperity."

The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and associates each year with one of 12 animals whose personalities dictate the characteristics of each 12-month period. On Wednesday, the Year of the Rooster begins.
