US House approves tighter immigration controls

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US House of Representatives approved a bill that seeks to increase controls on illegal immigration and asylum seekers.

The bill, characterized by supporters as an effort to protect the US against terrorists, would close a five kilometer (three mile) gap in the California-Mexico border fence near San Diego, make easier the deportation of terrorism suspects, and deny drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants.

The legislation, sponsored by Republican representative James Sensenbrenner, was approved by a vote of 261 to 161. It must be approved by the Senate and signed by the president before becoming law.

The legislation addresses significant vulnerabilities in immigration statues, its backers say.
