Walchhofer overcomes bogey course to win downhill

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AFP) — Michael Walchhofer won the men's World Cup downhill on his bogey course ahead of fellow Austrian Hermann Maier and world champion Bode Miller of the United States.
Walchhofer timed 1min 57.79sec to extend his lead in the downhill standings with Maier at 0.99sec and overall World Cup leader Miller at 1.13sec.
For Walchhofer victory was a welcome change of fortune on a slope where he has only managed to negotiate the final bend once in his last five attempts.
"We were saying that if he fell one more time at the FIS-Schneise turn we'd have to rename it the Walchhofer Schneise," joked Miller.
In confident mood after two medals at the world championships in Bormio, Walchhofer said this had been one of his season...
