TOKYO (AFP) — Yahoo Japan Corp., Japan's largest Internet portal operator, plans to begin offering a music download service through an alliance with a local music distribution firm, Label Gate.
The new service, Yahoo! Music Download, will provide about 73,000 songs online for 158-368 yen each (1.5-3.5 dollars) from artists on 39 record labels.
Customers will be able to download music into their personal computers and other electronic gadgets.
Label Gate Co. Ltd., established by record labels led by Sony Music Entertainment Inc., estimates that about two million songs will be downloaded through its "Mora" music downloading service in the year to March 2005.
That total includes songs to be downloaded via Yahoo! Music Download.
