Israel pressures Syria, London conference stresses roadmap

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israel pressed its diplomatic offensive against arch-foe Damascus, as a London conference urged Israel and the Palestinians to stick to their commitments laid out in the roadmap peace plan.
One day after the pro-Syrian government collapsed in Beirut, Israel jacked up the international pressure on Syria to withdraw from Lebanon, calling on the world to isolate Damascus along with what it called other "extremists".
"We don't think Syria should remain in Lebanon. Their occupation should come to an end," said Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, speaking in Hungary.
"We should isolate the extremists -- that means Syria, Iran, the Hezbollah, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad," he added.
France, the United Nations and Washington have spearheaded mounting pressure on Damascus to pull its troops out of Lebanon and end interference in the country's political affairs.
