BAGHDAD (AFP) — A suicide car bomb killed six people and wounded 27 at an Iraqi army base, while gunmen assassinated a judge and his son serving on the tribunal set up to try Saddam Hussein and his top officials.

Would-be army recruits and soldiers were lined up by the entrance to the base in western Baghdad at the disused al-Muthanna airport when a white car sped to the gates and exploded, eyewitnesses said.

"Two soldiers were lifted up into the air and knocked across the street," said Hussein Mohammed, who was 20 metres (yards) away when the car exploded.

Insurgents regularly target Iraqi army recruits and soldiers in a campaign aimed at terrorising those supporting the US-backed Iraqi government.
