UN accuses DR Congo militia of war crimes

KINSHASA (AFP) — The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo accused militia forces of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Ituri region after nine Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed there.

"After committing war crimes against our soldiers when they finished off wounded ones, they (the militia) yesterday (Tuesday) committed crimes against humanity by using civilians as human shields," a top MONUC officer said Wednesday in Kinshasa.

On Tuesday, UN peacekeeping troops killed more than 50 militiamen in a counter-attack in the volatile Ituri region of northeastern DRC, five days after the ambush in which nine Bangladeshi troops were slain and 11 wounded.
