Prince Charles welcomed by Australian republicans on low-key tour

MELBOURNE (AFP) — Prince Charles was given a warm welcome by anti-monarchists as he walked the streets of Melbourne, while Australia's future king maintained the low-key nature of the tour by apologising for interrupting people's shopping.
About 20 republicans greeted the prince at the city's Federation Square, holding up a tongue-in-cheek banner reading: "Republicans welcome Charles, our future head of state".
As he walked among those at a farmers market and spoke to members of the crowd of several hundred, Prince Charles jokingly acknowledged that not everyone had come to see him and apologised for inconveniencing shoppers.
"Are you going to the farmer's market shopping?" he asked one woman. "Am I interrupting?"
When she replied that she had come to the area to see him, he replied: "It's a very rash thing to do."
