MELBOURNE (AFP) — Prince Charles was given a warm welcome by anti-monarchists as he walked the streets of Melbourne, while Australia's future king maintained the low-key nature of the tour by apologising for interrupting people's shopping.

About 20 republicans greeted the prince at the city's Federation Square, holding up a tongue-in-cheek banner reading: "Republicans welcome Charles, our future head of state".

As he walked among those at a farmers market and spoke to members of the crowd of several hundred, Prince Charles jokingly acknowledged that not everyone had come to see him and apologised for inconveniencing shoppers.
