Israeli PM faces renewed pressure from own party over Gaza pullout

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon faced renewed pressure over his controversial initiative to evacuate the Gaza Strip, with his right-wing Likud party aiming to rally for a referendum on the plan.
Sharon, who has been threatened with death and castigated by many of his traditional supporters over his plan to withdraw Jewish settlers and Israeli soldiers from Gaza this year, has flatly refused to hold a referendum.
"I think 90 percent of the central committee members will this evening rally behind a compromise I have drawn up and support a resolution calling on MPs to legislate a referendum on the withdrawal," said Likud chairman Tzahi Hanegbi.
Likud's 3,000 central committee members were to hold an extraordinary meeting in Tel Aviv to vote on the resolution urging Likud MPs to promote a referendum bill on the Gaza plan.
