Top US official in Malawi to assess reforms

BLANTYRE, Malawi (AFP) — The US State Department's top Africa official arrived in Malawi on the the first such high-level trip in more than 15 years to assess President Bingu wa Mutharika's reform programme which could earn the southern African nation more cash aid.

Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Constance Newman will meet Mutharika on Friday in the administrative capital Lilongwe.
