Fossett in home stretch of solo non-refueled round-the-world flight

SALINA, United States (AFP) — After battling fuel problems and exhaustion, American adventurer Steve Fossett was in the home stretch of his historic bid to make the first solo, non-stop flight around the world without refueling.
Fossett, a 60-year-old millionaire who has also circumnavigated the globe alone in a hot air balloon, is expected to land his experimental jet plane, the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, at Salina Municipal Airport at 1:17 pm (1917 GMT).
"I feel pretty good. I'm really starting to perk up because I'm close to the end," Fossett told reporters via a satellite video hookup, the sun shining through the window of his cockpit to reveal a huge grin.
"I'm enjoying the trip but it's a lot of work for one person," he added, explaining that the light-bodied plane required near constant adjustments in order to maintain maximum fuel efficiency. ...
