TOKYO (AFP) — Japanese police booked an insect-loving father and son for smuggling in one of the world's largest beetles in the first such case targeting a national passion for exotic insects.

The 51-year-old professional cricket trader and his 18-year-old son bought 10 Goliathus cacicus beetles from Africa through a dealer in France without permission, police said.

The pair, who live in Akashi, western Japan, paid 90,000 yen (860 dollars) for the rare beetles in December. They sold six of them for a total of 120,000 yen through an Internet auction site while keeping the remaining four at home, a police spokesman said.
