South Africa's famed Kruger mulls elephant culling

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — South African wildlife authorities are considering controversial cullings to bring down Kruger National Park's booming elephant population, an official said.

A moratorium on culling the large mammals has been in place since 1995 and some 12,000 of the pachyderms are now living in Kruger, South Africa's largest and best known national game reserve.

"We are not saying we are going to cull, we are saying we would like that option to be considered," said Hector Mogame, executive director of South African National Parks (SANParks), which runs Kruger.

"At some stage the elephant population in Kruger National Park will burst at its seams and that has to be handled. Our task is to alert the public and to warn them of these possibilities," Mogame...
