Bush to attend pope's funeral

WASHINGTON (AFP) — President George W. Bush, set to be the first US head of state to attend a papal funeral, praised Pope John Paul II's moral authority while glossing over his fierce opposition to the Iraq war.

Bush said that he and First Lady Laura Bush would lead the US delegation to Friday's ceremonies for the late pontiff, who shared their opposition to abortion and euthanasia but broke sharply over the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

"It is my great honor on behalf of our country to express our gratitude to the Almighty for such a man," Bush told reporters. "And of course we look forward to the majesty of celebrating such a significant human life."
