TOMBSTONE, United States (AFP) — More than 140 would-be undocumented immigrants from Mexico have been arrested since civilian volunteers launched a controversial border patrol, organizers said.

Formal patrols along the US-Mexican border in the state of Arizona began only on Monday, the Minuteman Project said, adding that 141 were arrested by advance operations.

"It has been successful. No one has come across," said Chris Simcox, whose Civil Homeland Defense border group is part of the Minuteman Project.

"Some 141 people were apprehended by the Border Patrol," the official US agency, as a result of the presence of Minuteman Project volunteers along the border ahead of Monday's launch of their patrols, he told AFP.
