VATICAN CITY (AFP) — The long fond farewell to Pope John Paul II was only just beginning as more than 100,000 ordinary mourners lined up to enter St Peter's Basilica during a lying-in-state which is to last three days.

Italian media reported that half a million people had queued up to see the body laid out before the basilica's main altar since the public viewing began around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) the night before.

"Only faith can move all these people," said Sister Pia who although she had already seen the pope's body, decided to join the queue all over again.
