Long goodbye to pope just beginning as crowds throng Vatican

VATICAN CITY (AFP) — The long fond farewell to Pope John Paul II was only just beginning as more than 100,000 ordinary mourners lined up to enter St Peter's Basilica during a lying-in-state which is to last three days.
Italian media reported that half a million people had queued up to see the body laid out before the basilica's main altar since the public viewing began around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) the night before.
"Only faith can move all these people," said Sister Pia who although she had already seen the pope's body, decided to join the queue all over again.
At dawn Tuesday, the huge crowd stretched from the imposing basilica down the broad avenue from the Vatican to the river Tiber and crammed side-streets. Thousands had joined the line late on Monday. Thousands more were arriving on buses and metro trains. ...
