Spanish court begins enquiry into deaths of nine Spaniards in Rwanda

MADRID (AFP) — An enquiry will be made into the deaths of nine Spaniards allegedly murdered in Rwanda between 1994-2000 at the hands of the members of the ruling party and army.

A judge in Spain's top court on Friday accepted a complaint from the International Forum for Truth and Justice in Africa on behalf of a group of Rwandan exiles calling for proceedings similar to those that saw Spain attempt to extradite Chile's former dictator Augusto Pinochet from London in 1998 and try him for deaths of Spanish citizens by his regime.

The investigating judge decided to limit the enquiry to the murders of nine Spaniards, which includes six Catholic missionaries, a nurse, a doctor and a journalist, killed in four separate attacks over a six-year period, a judicial source...
