Monaco close gap on Lille with 2-0 home win

MONACO (AFP) — Second half goals from Sebastien Squillaci and Emmanuel Adebayor boosted Monaco's Champions League hopes next season with a 2-0 win over Lille in this weekend's only French league game.
In a match postponed following the death of Prince Rainier last month, the hosts did not disappoint fans moving to within a point of second-place Lille in the French league table.
Leaders Lyon have 69 points from 34 games with Lille on 58 and Monaco, 57, four ahead of Marseille, their leading rivals for a Champions League berth.
Sunday's result also means defending champions Lyon can wrap up the title next weekend.
Monaco coach Didier Deschamps, who had insisted that nothing less than a win would do, was not disappointed as his side achieved their first home win against Lille since the 1996/97 season.
