Van Gundy defends Yao, slapped with record USD100,000 fine

NEW YORK (AFP) — Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy came to the defence of his giant centre Yao Ming but it ended up costing him heavily.
Van Gundy was slapped with a 100,000 US dollar fine on Tuesday -- the largest fine against a coach in National Basketball Association history.
Van Gundy was fined for criticizing league officials following Saturday's playoff game against the Dallas Mavericks.
The fine was announced by NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson. Van Gundy made the comments Sunday, one day after the Rockets lost their second straight home playoff game to the Dallas Mavericks.
Van Gundy was complaining about a move by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who was said to have sent videotapes with alleged illegal screens set by Rockets centre Yao to the NBA for review.
