Zimbabwe grapples with growing elephant population

HARARE (AFP) — Zimbabwe's government has invited local farmers to buy elephants from its overburdened national parks as the country battles to prevent an unfolding ecological disaster, the country's wildlife and parks chief said.
"We are inviting farmers both old and new to buy elephants to de-congest areas where elephant populations are concentrated and we are experiencing serious vegetation damage and biodiversity loss," National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority director Maurice Mutsambiwa told AFP.
"Ideally we should have one elephant on a square kilometre (0.4 square mile) but we have a situation in places like Hwange National Park, the Zambezi Valley and Gonarezhou National Park where we have four elephants per square kilometre."
He said because of their concentration in small areas the elephants were damaging vegetation and driving other species to extinction.
Zimbabwe has 100.000 elephants against its carrying capacity of 45 000.
