HARARE (AFP) — Zimbabwe's government has invited local farmers to buy elephants from its overburdened national parks as the country battles to prevent an unfolding ecological disaster, the country's wildlife and parks chief said.

"Ideally we should have one elephant on a square kilometre (0.4 square mile) but we have a situation in places like Hwange National Park, the Zambezi Valley and Gonarezhou National Park where we have four elephants per square kilometre."
