Fortress Riga braces for visit of US president for Baltic-US summit

RIGA (AFP) — The Latvian capital Riga prepared to go into security lockdown for the first visit by US President George W. Bush to the Baltic country, for a summit meeting with the leaders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Stringent security measures have been put in place for the visit, the first by a US president to Latvia since 1994, when president Bill Clinton visited shortly after the Baltic state negotiated the withdrawal of Russian troops after nearly 50 years.
Last week, Latvian lawmakers fast-tracked a legislative amendment through parliament, granting the prime or defence minister the right to order suspect airplanes to be shot out of the sky.
Charter flights and light aircraft will be banned from flying into and out of Riga airport during the Bush visit. Part of the centre of Riga will be closed off as of Friday afternoon ahead of the US leader's arrival, ...
