UN probe chief challenges handover of documents to US

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — Paul Volcker, head of a UN-appointed probe into the oil-for-food programme, questioned the decision of a former staffer to hand over documents to Washington under subpoena.
In a statement that underlined the tension between Volcker and US lawmakers probing the scandal-tainted programme, he called into question Robert Parton's decision to obey the subpoena and transfer files to US lawmakers.
His commission's work "requires confidentiality with respect both to sources who have entrusted the enquiry with vital information and to the committees own deliberations," Volcker said.
