Hong Kong's Hutchison plans to spin off UK 3G operations mid-2006

HONG KONG (AFP) — Hutchison Whampoa, Hong Kong's ports-to-telecoms conglomerate controlled by Asia's richest man Li Ka-shing, said it plans to spin off its UK 3G operations by the middle of next year.

Li also reiterated the company plans to list its Italian 3G business before the end of this year.

Li was speaking after Hutchison's annual shareholders meeting Thursday.

He said Hutchison Whampoa wants to get a 3G license in Poland but declined to comment on reports that it will buy a stake in a 3G mobile phone license holder in Spain.

Reports have said that Hutchison is in advanced talks to buy up to 50 percent stake in Spain's third generation (3G) mobile phone license holder Xfera.
