CARDIFF (AFP) — Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez hit two late birdies to card an impressive six-under-par 63 and join in a share of the lead after the first round of the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor here.
Jimenez, who birdied the 16th and 17th holes on Thursday in a seven-birdie first round total, shares the lead with English trio David Lynn, former English amateur champion James Heath and Gary Emerson.
Another Englishman, Stuart Little, sits a shot further back with a one-shot lead over Michael Campbell of New Zealand and Frenchman Jean-Francois Lucquin.
Ireland's Paul McGinley, who finished second in the BMW Championship at Wentworth on Sunday, recovered from two over after four holes to finish one under at 68.
