Dotson jailed for 35 years for murdering former basketball teammate

WACO, United States (AFP) — Former Baylor university basketball player Carlton Dotson was sentenced to 35 years in prison, a week after pleading guilty to murdering his teammate Patrick Dennehy in 2003.
State district judge Ralph Strother sentenced Dotson on Wednesday based on documents filed by prosecutors and defense attorneys.
Last Wednesday, Dotson, 23, pleaded guilty without a sentencing deal from prosecutors.
Dotson was ruled incompetent to stand trial last fall and admitted to a state mental hospital. But he was released and returned to jail in February after a hospital psychologist declared that Dotson was mentally competent.
