CARSON, United States (AFP) — Athens Olympic gold medallist Jeremy Wariner signalled his World Championship intentions in the 400m as he took the US title in a 2005 world-leading time of 44.20sec.
Wariner, who has had a quiet season to date, easily beat his training partner and rival Darold Williamson, who finished second in 44.62sec.
Andrew Rock took third in 44.70 to book the final place on offer for the World Championships in Helsinki in August.
Williamson had posted the fastest time in the world to date of 44.27 on June 10 at the US collegiate championships semi-finals in Sacramento, California.
"I win the other ones. He wins the important ones," Williamson said ruefully of Wariner.
Even so, he was thrilled to claim his ticket to Helsinki...
